Apollo Career Center donates to cause
LIMA — Apollo Career Center students raised some $4,000 for the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. The donations culminated in a bowlathon on Friday at Westgate Lanes with a check presentation to the organization.
Alternative students release butterflies
LIMA — Seniors in the Lima Senior High School Alternative program will release butterflies at 12:15 p.m. Wednesdayu at South Science Technology Magnet School.
The butterfly release is a symbol of the students’ graduation and transformation to the next stage of their lives. Students first began observing and caring for the caterpillars and then watched as they turned into butterflies.
Shawnee Optimist Club presents scholarships
LIMA — The Shawnee Optimist Club presented scholarships on May 4 to the following students:
Morgan Schroeder from Lima Central Catholic; Hannah Blankenship from Perry; Kelsey Boyes from Shawnee; and Kabe Flynn from Shawnee.
The students read their essays about optimism and shared their future plans after graduation.
South Science students participate in farm day
LIMA — South Science and Technology Magnet School students hosted Farm Day. The day provided students with hands-on experiences to introduce them to the world of agriculture.
Farm Day was held Tuesday.
Students viewed farm equipment, farm animals, hayrides, healthy snacks and hands-on activities, including a mechanical milking cow.
Congressman Latta recognizes students
DELPHOS — Trey Smith, of Delphos, and a student at Delphos Jefferson High School was accepted to one of the U.S. Military Service Academies. The students were nominated by U.S. Rep. Bob Latta and have received offers of appointment for the Class of 2020 at their respective schools.
Smith received an appointment from the U.S. Air Force Academy, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Also receiving an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy was Andrew Hammond, of Van Wert, who attends Van Wert High School.
Thomas Koizumi, of Findlay, who attends Liberty-Benton High School, received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy, in West Point, New York.
James Reneau Jr., of Findlay, from Findlay High School, received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, in Annapolis, Maryland.
Paulding student receives honor
PAULDING — Juan Maldonado, a student at Paulding Elementary was honored by the Ohio Lottery as an academic all star.
For being recognized as an academic all star, Maldonado will receive an assortment of Partners in Education merchandise from the Ohio Lottery along with a gift card.

Crestview music department presents pops concert
CONVOY — Crestview High School Music Department will present its Pops Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the high school auditeria.
The jazz band, high school band, high school chorus and Knight-Vision show choir will be performing.
Lima Elks Lodge 54 honors youth
LIMA — The Lima Elks Lodge 54 held its Youth Reception.
Lauren Elizabeth Buddelmeyer was awarded “Student of The Year” honors for the 2015-16 school year. Buddelmeyer will receive a $1,000 scholarship and a certificate of recognition.
Buddelmeyer is a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club, basketball team, Junior Optimist club, high school choir and science Olympiad team. She is an outstanding student in all academic areas and is actively involved in her community and church. She is planning on attending The Ohio State University or Toledo to become a physician’s assistant.
All students of the month for the year 2015-16 were honored and included:

Allen County teachers receive grants
LIMA — Allen County Retired Teachers Association awarded 11 grants to area teachers in April. These grants are open to preschool to high school educators.
The grants were awarded to: Kendra Bassitt, of Bath; Laura Warnement, Stacey Foreback, Ashley Feathers, Meghan McKinney, Sara Bowsher, all of Lima City Schools; Dianne Hoehn, of Perry; Denise Davenport, Jennifer Vonderwell, Pat and Dan Meeks, OBrien & Quatman, of Shawnee; and Josie Belton, of Spencerville.
Lima Senior High band students earn awards
LIMA — Lima Senior High School band members earned awards at the final concert of the year.
Nathaniel Bankston won the John Philip Sousa Band Award; Markus Ly received the Woody Herman Jazz Award; Jeremy Parent received the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award; Connor Brayton the Patrick S. Gilmore Band Award; Danielle Bash the National School Marching Award; and Nathaniel Bankston, Jeremy Parent, and Abby White received Honors Band Recognition.
Seniors receiving recognition included: Anthony Andrews, Nathaniel Bankston, Danielle Bash, Chase Bicknell, Malcom Davis, Jacob Fike, David Grundish, Markus Ly, Jeremy Parent, Janel Roach, Austin Fleck, Trinity Glenn, Moriah Henry, Sari Jones, Derek Snider, Tashara Mays and Ben White.

Perry Elementary hosting Family Fun Night
LIMA — Perry Elementary is hosting “Feelin’ Groovy” Family Fun Night from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Family Fun Night celebrates reading with activities for parents and students. Al Duncan will speak from 5:30 to 6 p.m. He is an award-winning youth advocate, publisher and an internationally recognized authority on soft skills.
Bluffton University hosting Junior High Mathematics Enrichment Camp
BLUFFTON — Bluffton University’s mathematics department will offer an enrichment camp from June 6 through June 9 for students who have completed grades seven or eight, have taken and passed at least an accelerated pre-algebra course, and are interested in mathematics enrichment.
The camp will meet from 10 a.m. to noon in Centennial Hall, Room 206.
A fee of $20 covers instructions and material fees.

Lima West Middle School students attend rally
LIMA — Thirty-one Lima West Middle School female students attended the We are the Majority drug free rally in Columbus last week.
Lima West made up the largest group to attend from the Lima area.
The purpose of the rally is to celebrate youth who make good choices in their lives and show that most youth are drug and alcohol free and do make positive choices.
Area youth represent optimists at competition
LIMA — Madison Downing, from Shawnee Middle School, and Calahan Wolfrum, from Van Wert High Schoool, won in their region in the Optimist Oratorical Competition.
Madison, an eighth-grader, won the District Oratorical and was presented with $3,500. she was selected to compete in St. Louis at the National Oratorical Competition.
Freedom K-Kids obtain charter
LIMA — The K-Kids Club at Freedom Elementary School received its charter from Kiwanis International on May 4.
The K-Kids Club of Freedom is a part of the Kiwanis Family of Clubs. The club is the newest one sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Lima. Several schools in the Lima City Schools have partnered with Kiwanis and established student clubs.
Hosts needed for foreign exchange students from Asia
LIMA — World Heritage Student Exchange Programs are looking for American families to host high school students from Asia. These students speak English, are bright, curious and eager to learn about our country through living as part of a family for an academic year and attending high school.
World Heritage is looking for host families for students coming from Japan, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Mongolia and South Korea.
The exchange students arrive shortly before school begins and return at the end of the school year. Each student is fully insured and brings his or her personal spending money.

Kindergarten, preschool open houses set
LIMA — Lima City Schools will hold kindergarten open houses at its various school buildings.
The open houses are ways for parents and future kindergartners to visit the building, meet staff and get questions about kindergarten answered.
South Science and Technology Magnet School: 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Liberty Arts Magnet School: 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Thursday.
Unity Elementary School: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.
Heritage Elementary School: 2 p.m. Friday.
Independence Elementary School: 2:30 p.m. May 18.
Freedom Elementary School: 2 to 3 p.m. May 18.
The district’s preschool program will hold an open house from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Unity, Heritage, Independence and Freedom elementary schools. This program serves students who are eligible for special-education services as preschoolers with disabilities, as well as typically developing 3-, 4- and 5-year-old children. Children must be 3 years old by Aug. 1 to enroll in next year’s program.
The district will also hold a special day for parents of kindergartners to register their children online and get help doing so. Computers will be set up from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday in Room A9 at Lima Senior High School. There will be school staff available to offer assistance.
A Jump Start to Kindergarten one-stop registration event will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Aug. 4 at Liberty. Families can register their children, enjoy a hot dog lunch, visit district and community agency booths, and win prizes.
Parents need to bring their child’s Social Security card, immunization records, original copy of birth certificate, current physical, Medicaid or insurance card, and custody papers (if applicable).
North Middle School students host roller coaster expo
LIMA — Fifth- and sixth -grade enrichment students at Lima North Middle School have been building mini roller coasters that will be on display at an expo.
The Roller Coaster Expo will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at North Middle School.
