Wapakoneta takes home WBL Scholastic Bowl championship

LIMA — Wapakoneta High School took home the varsity crown Friday during the Western Buckeye League Scholastic Bowl Tournament held at OSU-Lima.

St. Marys took home the championship in the junior varsity division.

The competition is hosted annually by OSU-Lima. Janet Anderson with OSU-Lima said the competition is designed to challenge the participants.

“There are companies that sell questions, and we buy eight or nine sets of them,” Anderson said. “We proof through all of them and make sure they are challenging. We edit some of them to make them harder or to fit the needs of our competition.”

Anderson said the questions run the gamut as far as academia, including mathematics, science, history, social studies and the social sciences. The schools face each other in one-on-one competition in a round robin format.

Brooklyn Iiames, 17, a junior at Bath High School, has been participating in scholastic bowls since she was in the fifth grade. She said the event is serious, but still a good time.

“I like to participate because I think it is very challenging,” Iiames said, “but I also enjoy getting to meet the different kids from the different schools. Every question you get is relatively challenging.”

Iiames said the teams usually have members with strong subjects, and they are able to draw on each others strengths and weaknesses. She said this encourages working as a team.

Most of the teams met regularly twice a week before or after school and sometimes would have sessions focusing on a certain area.

Wapakoneta won eight of its nine matchups in taking home the trophy. Shawnee finished second in the varsity competition.

St. Marys swept all eight of its matches in winning the junior varsity championship. Van Wert was the runner-up.

The all-tournament team included Brian Jacoby, Wapakoneta, Josh Bull, Elida, Jacob Buccholz, Defiance, Chris Nelson, Celina, Noah Young, Bath, Cameron Hanover, Shawnee, Chris Kraner, Van Wert, Brad Schmitz, Ottawa-Glandorf, Bailey Sparks, St. Marys, and Ben Pistora, Kenton.
