Ottawa man in critical condition after police standoff

OTTAWA — An Ottawa man was in critical condition after an early morning standoff with law enforcement Saturday in Putnam County.

At 3:36 a.m., the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a man with a gun at 6707 U.S. Route 224 east of Ottawa. Upon arrival, officers began to attempt to negotiate with Matthew Mullins, 25, with the dialogue lasting two hours. At 5:33 a.m. Mullins shot himself with a handgun and was taken to St. Rita’s Ambulatory Care Center in Glandorf and then flown by helicopter to St. Rita’s Medical Center, where he was receiving treatment Saturday.

No one else was in the residence, according to the department.
