Lima launches new mobile app

LIMA — The city of Lima has taken another step in its efforts to increase accessibility with the creation of a mobile app that is now available for both iOS and Android devices.

The idea behind the app, which was introduced Wednesday at Mayor David Berger’s weekly media briefing, is not only to make information on the city’s website more readily available, but also to make it easier for residents to reach those in city government.

“It does provide an easy way for folks who have their phones and want to take a photograph of something, like a pothole or grass that’s overgrown, to take that photo and ship it in with any other information they want us to have,” Berger said. “Also, I think that registering to receive notifications from us is a good way to stay up on news relating to the city, such as job openings and other things being announced.”

Anyone submitting a photo of a concern can provide a description, as well, along with the location of the concern, provided either by the phone’s GPS, physically typing in the address, or using a built-in street map in the app to mark its location. Anyone wishing to receive notifications or alerts can sign up via the app to receive them either by text message or email.

Along with receiving notifications of alerts, app users can also view agendas for City Council and committee meetings, a street directory for all departments, job listings, as they become available, and archived information, such as council minutes, budgets and annual police reports.

“The Fire Department even has a form on it to request a tour of the fire station,” data systems manager Gary Wurst said.

Wurst was comfortable that this app will help residents find any information they need about city government, but he recognized that, as with any new technology, there could be some hiccups along the way.

“Like any software, I’m sure we’ll find some bugs, and we’ll take care of them as we find them,” he said.

The city of Lima app is available by searching for “City of Lima OH” on the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
