Area students receive scholarships

LIMA — The Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges, through its Ohio Scholars Program, awarded 974 scholarships statewide to students enrolled in its 34 member colleges for the 2015-16 academic year. The total value of the scholarships is more than $1.75 million.

The Ohio Scholars Program is funded by 162 corporations and foundations.

All scholarship recipients were selected based on recommendations form their colleges and they meet criteria established by the donors. The criteria may include area of study, academic standing, geographic region or ethnicity.

Students receiving scholarships include:

Aaron Basinger, of Bluffton, received the AmeriKohl Mining Inc. scholarship. He attends Franciscan University of Steubenville.

Nathan Cellar, of Elida, received Crown Equipment Corporation scholarship. He attends Bluffton University.

Lindzi Hoersten, of Delphos, received AmeriKohl Mining Inc. scholarship. She attends University of Dayton.

Benjamin Kerber, of Lima, received First Solar Corporation scholarship. He attends Ohio Northern University.

Brianna Kidd, of Lima, received the AmeriKohl Mining Inc. scholarship. She attends Urbana University.

Jacob Lehman, of Lima, received the Crown Equipment Corp. scholarship. He attends Ohio Northern University.

Amanda Rhoad, of Lima, received the First Solar Corp. scholarship. She attends Ohio Northern University.

Alyssa Schimmoeller, of Delphos, received the AmeriKohl Mining Inc. scholarship. She attends the University of Dayton.

Zachary Siefker, of Elida, received the Crown Equipment Corp. scholarship. He attends the University of Dayton.

Anthony Sumpter, of Lima, received The UPS Foundation Inc. scholarship. He attends Ohio Dominican University.

Aerika Wieser, of Lima, received the Medical Mutual of Ohio scholarship. She attends Urbana University.

Jared Emerson, of Lakeview, received the Crown Equipment Corp. scholarship. He attends Ohio Northern University.

Kayla Richard, of Minster, received the Battelle scholarship. She attends Ohio Wesleyan University.

Amanda Sims, of Wapakoneta, received the Parker Hannifin Corp. scholarship. She attends Cedarville University.

Matthew Boyd, of Ada, received the Landman-Goldman Foundation scholarship. He attends Ohio Northern University.

Karl Karcher, of Ada, received the Western & Southern Financial Fund scholarship. He attends Bluffton University.

Jacob Rindler, of St. Henry, received the Ancora Advisors Inc. scholarship. He attends Defiance College.

Cody Frick, of West Leipsic, received the Philip S. Willis Endowed scholarship. He attends The University of Findlay.

Jessica Niese, of Leipsic, received the First Solar Corporation scholarship. She attends Ohio Northern University.

Jamie Saum, of Fort Jennings, received the Philip S. Willis Endowed scholarship. She attends The University of Findlay.

LCC grad recognized at Mount Union

LIMA — Jacob Tremoulis, a senior exercise science major at University of Mount Union in Alliance was recognized at the senior recognition and honors convocation held April 19.

He was honored with Alpha Lambda Delta Senior Certificate winner.

Each year the convocation honors graduating seniors and underclass students who have excelled academically, displayed excellent leadership skills and shown dedication to the university and community through outstanding community service initiatives.

Waynesfield resident joins Geology Club

WAYNESFIELDLayne Spencer, of Waynesfield, is a member of Ashland University’s Geology Club. Spencer is majoring in integrated science and is a 2015 graduate of Waynesfield High School.

The purpose of the club is to explore areas of geology and/or earth science that cannot be studied in the classroom or lab.

UNOH sends students to national competition

LIMA — The University of Northwestern Ohio chapter of the Business Professionals of America will compete in the national competition held May 5 through May 10 in Boston.

Eight UNOH students are competing: Aaron Dickerson, Shanna Farler, Paige Lehman, Eric Lochtefeld, Ashleigh Mangini, Patrizio Martinez Rodriguez, Chaz Ramirez and Jason Rue. The adviser is Dr. Robyn King-VanDyne.

These students will be judged in their respective areas of expertise on various business skills. The national competition includes both individual and team events.

Holly Diller receives award

VAN WERT — Holly Diller, a senior biblical counseling major at Bob Jones University was awarded second place in the photograph category by the South Carolina Press Association in its Collegiate Annual News Contest. She received the awad for her photograph taken for the weekly student newspaper, The Collegian.

Area residents graduate from Goshen College

GOSHEN, Ind. — Area residents graduated from Goshen College on Sunday.

Area residents included Lucas B. Harnish, of Bluffton, with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, graduating Magna Cum Laude; Kelsey R. Smith, of Lima, with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, Summa Cum Laude; and Halle Elizabeth Freeman Steingass, of Pandora, with a bachelor’s degree in social work, Summa Cum Laude.

ONU Dicke College of Business Administration ranked 45 in nation

ADA — Ohio Northern University’s Dicke College of Business Administration has been ranked No. 45 in the nation by Bloomberg Businessweek in the publication’s annual ranking of undergraduate business programs. This ranking is up 27 spots from the previous year. In addition, the report shows that 68.8 percent of graduates of the Dicke College of Business Administration now work for the company for which they interned.

UNOH hosts annual spring career fair for

College of Applied Technologies students and alumni

LIMA — The University of Northwestern Ohio College of Applied Technologies semiannual career fair will be held May 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. and May 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Event Center at UNOH campus. More than 60 well-known companies are expected to attend the career fair and are looking to hire automotive, diesel, high performance, robotics, agricultural, HVAC/R and alternate fuels technology students.

Throughout the career fair, the students will have the opportunity to meet prospective employers, talk to them one on one and hand out résumés. Some students will be able to set up appointments to be formally interviewed by the attending companies.

Huntsville native receives degree

HUNTSVILLE — Bianca Page, of Huntsville, awarded Doctor of Chiropractic Degree from National University of Health Sciences.

Wapak resident receives award

WAPAKONETA — Alec Temple, of Wapakoneta, received the Junior award for the Department of Economics/finance at the Academic Honors Convocation at Ashland University on Sunday. He is majoring in political science.

Temple is the son of G. Eric and Linda Temple, and is a 2014 graduate of Wapakoneta Senior High School.

Bluffton University announces May Day royalty

BLUFFTON — Bluffton University’s annual May Day ceremony will take place at 1:30 p.m May 7. This event includes the tradition of the crowning of a king and queen and the Maypole dance by first-year students.

Samuel Stucky, of Pittsburgh, is this year’s king and Alicia Rodriguez, of Phoenix, is the queen.

First-year students chosen to participate in the Maypole dance include: Colyn Starrett, of Killbuck; Genna Zachrich, of Findlay; Jonah Eckert, of Terra Haute, Indiana; Morganne Faler, of Huntsville; Justin Berg, of Goshen, Indiana; Hannah Stephens, of St. Clairsville; Seth Regula, of Jackson; Kasandera Knief, of Lewistown; Austin Schaller, of Findlay; Caitlin Haab, of Normal, Illinois; Claire Clay, of Van Wert; Cara Echols, of New Bremen; Ezra Amstutz, of Goshen, Indiana; Becky Boban, of Madison; Eddie Martin, of Goshen, Indiana; and Meghan Gibson, of Pandora.

University of Findlay has Day of Giving

FINDLAY — The University of Findlay hosted a Day of Giving on Wednesday. All donations made on this day and between April 1 through July 31 to Findlay Fund scholarships will be matched by an anonymous alumnus.

The event to be held online and on campus, encourages donations to Findlay Fund scholarship, which allows students to worry less about their finances.
