Mercer County offers expired/unused drug dropoff

CELINA — The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office will hold a drug take back event as part of the National Drug Take Back Initiative from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the office.

During this event, the public may dispose of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to The Mercer County Detention Facility parking lot at 4835 state Route 29.

The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. Please do not bring syringes or liquids.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. National rates of prescription drug abuse are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses because of these drugs.

So far in 2016, the Sheriff’s Office has collected more than 75 pounds of drugs from the drug drop box, in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office, and from take back events.

The drop box is available 24 hours a day.
