Auglaize officers chase, catch fleeing wanted man

WAPAKONETA — A Mercer County man determined to get away from deputies led them on a high-speed chase Monday afternoon before crashing his car and trying to make a run for it before deputies captured him.

Bobby L. Mowery, 41, was in the Auglaize County jail expecting to face serious charges. He was being held on a previous warrant from Mercer County for fleeing and eluding, and charges related to the chase, Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon said.

About 1 p.m. Monday, Mercer County Sheriff officials alerted the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office about a wanted man who was fleeing and eluding deputies in a car. Deputies spotted the vehicle driving east on U.S. Route 33, Solomon said.

Two Auglaize County deputies tried to stop the car, and a chase began into Shelby County, bouncing back into Auglaize County. The chase hit Botkins, New Knoxville and New Bremen with speeds reaching more than 80 mph along the way, Solomon said.

Deputies tried to use stop strips along the way but were unsuccessful. A New Bremen police officer was able to successfully use a stop strip to flatten one tire, but the driver continued, Solomon said.

The chase continued onto state Route 29 near St. Marys, where police in the city were able to initiate a maneuver that caused the car to go off the road and overturn, Solomon said.

The suspect still was not ready to surrender. He ran from the vehicle into a creek where officers caught him, Solomon said.
