Youth wild turkey hunting down slightly this year

COLUMBUS — Young hunters harvested 1,564 turkeys during the 2016 youth spring wild turkey season, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Hunters 17 and under were eligible to participate in the two-day season on Saturday and Sunday. The total harvest was a slight decrease from 2015, when 1,589 wild turkeys were checked. All hunters were required to possess a valid Ohio youth hunting license, a spring turkey permit and be accompanied by a non-hunting adult.

The regular spring turkey season began Monday and runs through May 15. The spring turkey season is open statewide except for Lake La Su An Wildlife Area.

Local harvest numbers for 2016 were as follows, with 2015 numbers in parentheses: Allen: 11 (10); Auglaize: 4 (2); Darke: 14 (15); Hancock: 3 (3); Hardin: 5 (4); Logan: 17 (6); Mercer: 1 (1); Paulding: 8 (11); Putnam: 12 (12); Shelby: 5 (6); Van Wert: 1 (1).
