Crestview recognizes outstanding students

CONVOY — Crestview Middle and High School inducted its winter 2015-16 top students into the “Red and Blue Clubs” during an assembly.

Qualifications to become a Blue Club member include: honor roll or merit roll for the semester, no grade below a “B” including exams, absent five or fewer days per semester and be an active member in three or more extracurricular activities. Rewards for members of each group include a trip to the movies.

The following were eligible for Blue Club induction for the winter quarter:

•Sixth grade: Ethan Best, Emily Greulach, Kaylee Pawlick, Maisee Short, Ryan Sowers, Jenessa Sparks, Hayden Tomlinson, Lauren Walls, Katie Williamson, Jacob Woodard, Daevon Kline.

•Seventh grade: Olivia Cunningham, Olivia Dirr, Logan Gerardot, Sophie Kline, Caron Kreisicher, Kaitlyn Motycka, Lindsey Schumm, Andrea Tussing.

•Eighth grade: Kimberly Adams, Morgan Dowler, Laney Jones, Madelyn Lamb, Drew Mosier.

•Ninth grade: Hannah Bouillon, Emma Bowen, Derick Dealey, Sarah Haggerty, Lauren Schumm, Olivia Skelton, Savannah Smith, Alyssa Taylor, Chelsea Taylor.

•10th grade: Ashley Bowen, Kara Strabbing.

•11th grade: Tommi Andersen, Caleb Bagley, Maci Baker, Sydney Bowen, Courtney Cearns, Cora Milay.

•12th grade: Hannah Bowen, Leslie Skelton, Kenadie Speith.

Red Club members must receive no grade less than a “C” during the semester, absent five or fewer days per semester and be an active member in at least two extracurricular activities.

Bluffton March student of the month

BLUFFTON — The Bluffton High School Student of the month for March is Elizabeth Nisly. She is the daughter of Lamar and Deborah Nisly, of Bluffton. Elizabeth is a senior and has a 4.0 GPA. She is in Spanish Club and on the Academic Team.

Nisly was a National Merit Scholar Finalist, voted “Youth of the Year” by the Exchange Club, and was an Academic All Ohio track athlete.

She is a member of the Bluffton track team and ran cross-country in the fall. Hobbies include reading, poetry writing, hair braiding, ukulele strumming and running.

For postsecondary classes she attends Bluffton University and Findlay University (dual-enrollment). After graduation she plans to attend Eastern Mennonite University and study writing and Spanish.

Van Wert Preschool holding book fair

VAN WERT — The First United Methodist Preschool is holding a book fair. It is located in the basement overflow room off the Jefferson Street entrance. Hours are 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Books purchased support First United Methodist Preschool.

The preschool is enrolling children for the 2016-17 year. Contact April Ellerbrock for information.

Ottawa-Glandorf student wins oratorical contest

OTTAWAKatie Fuetter, daughter of Jeff and Jan Fuetter, has won the Putnam County Optimist’s 2016 Oratorical contest. Katie represented the Putnam County Optimist at UNOH during the district essay finals.

This year’s topic was “How My Best Bring Out the Best in Others.” Fuetter is the founder of the O-G Chapter of The Glamour Girls. She and other Glamour Girls have been visiting area nursing homes bringing glamour to some of the residents.

Musical performed at Parkway High School

ROCKFORD — New York City’s Theatreworks USA will perform “The Lightning Thief,” a musical based on the first book in Rick Riordan’s popular “Percy Jackson & the Olympians” series, at 6 p.m. May 3 in the Parkway High School Auditorium.

The show is about an hour in length and recommended for audiences 8 years old and older.

Tickets for the show are $7.50 presale and can be purchased at http://showtix4u.com. Tickets are $10 the day of the show. All proceeds go to Parkway Elementary High 5, a parent teacher organization working to increase the educational opportunities of the students.

Crestview Elementary holds Spring Performance

CONVOY — The Crestview fifth-grade band, along with the fourth- and fifth-grade music classes held their spring concert April 12. The group performed musical selections that reminded the audience of some of their favorite foods to eat.

Anyone wishing to purchase a DVD of the performance may do so for $5. Checks made payable to Crestview schools or cash will be accepted; orders may be directed to Lindsey Newlove at Crestview Elementary School.

Marsh Youth help others

VAN WERT — The youth at The Marsh Foundation, in Van Wert, completed service projects during their spring break this year.

The Marsh girls helped with the Van Wert City Easter Egg Hunt and a small group also volunteered at the Humane Society’s Animal Shelter, cleaning and socializing animals in need of extra care. They also took a trip to Fort Wayne, Indiana, and worked for Miss Virginia’s Food Pantry, serving a record high 388 individuals.

One group of boys volunteered at the Lima Rescue Mission serving dinner to homeless men and cleaning up after the meal. Another group went to Habitat for Humanity Restore in Lima. The boys helped to clean and organize the supply area in the store.

Area schools participating in penny war

LIMA — During the week of April 25-29, students from 50 private schools across northwest Ohio will be participating in a Penny War called “Pennies to Dollars for Scholars” to raise funds for the Northwest Ohio Scholarship Fund. Each school will have its grades competing in a penny war and the winning grade will receive a class party.

Area schools competing include Delphos St. John; St. Anthony of Padua; St. Gerard School and St. Rose School.

This school year there are 550 students attending a private school or homeschool with an NOSF scholarship. Families whose household income is at 270 percent or below the poverty level can apply for the scholarship for their children.

The Pennies to Dollars for Scholars event is sponsored by Taylor Automotive. The public can help raise money by dropping off pennies at a participating dealership including Taylor Kia of Findlay and Lima and Taylor Hyundai of Findlay and Taylor Volkswagen of Findlay.

Area youth compete at Oho Beef Expo

HARROD — The Ohio Cattlemen’s Associaton hosted the Best of the Buckeye show at the Ohio Beef Expo.

The program recognizes top Ohio bred, born and registered calves, along with the breeder and exhibitor in each breed division at the two shows.

Breeder Jones Show Cattle, of Harrod took top honors along with their exhibitors:

Ali Muir, of Waynesfield; Caitlin Schaub, of Wapakoneta; Addison Jones and Delaney Jones, both of Harrod.
