Youth Profile: Artsy student wants to travel the world

LIMA — For 16-year-old Celine Doute, of Lima, her interest in art came at a very early age.

She is hoping to ride that interest that has continually built throughout her young life and see the world.

Celine was always “artsy” from the time she was very young. Her constant interest in drawing or painting was noticed by family members and close friends and it soon became clear that she had a knack for art. While in middle school, she did some drawings that were put into the student auction. The drawings made more than $200 for her school.

Just completing her sophomore year at Shawnee High School, Celine entered the 2016 Jerry Tollifson Art Criticism Open contest. Out of several hundred entries, she finished first statewide and was honored at a ceremony in Columbus in March. Celine’s award-winning essay was on a piece titled “Bal du Moulin de la Galette” by Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Now as she approaches her last two years in high school, she is looking to turn her interest in art into a career. She has hopes in applying her talents into computer design or some other area of technology and development. While applying her skills, she wants to travel the world. So she has also taking an interest in learning foreign languages.

“I am not quite sure what I will exactly do,” Celine said, “but I would like to be involved with computer design. I want to travel the world.”

To prepare herself, she is taking German in school and is also self-teaching herself Italian.

For college, she is looking at possibly attending Ball State, as she has had several relatives attend there, or is considering other schools in Georgia or New York.

“There are schools in those areas known for entertainment and the arts,” Celine said. “I would like to attend a good school.”

In her spare time, Celine was involved with the Lima Area Youth Orchestra for four years as a violinist and is also a self-taught piano player. In the fall, she will be participating for her second year on the Shawnee tennis team. She is also involved as a volunteer with Habitat Restore in Lima, which recycles old doors, furniture and other items and helps build homes in the Lima area.

Celine is the daughter of Jay and Heather Doute.
