Portable heater sets Lima house in flames Saturday

LIMA — A fire that began in a bathroom Saturday afternoon caused $23,000 in damage but resulted in no injuries or loss of life.

The Lima Fire Department was notified of a fire at 470 N. West St. at 1:18 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters could see smoke and flames emanating from the house, which was vacant at the time. Firefighters remained on scene until 2:48 p.m. extinguishing the fire and containing the damage from it to the first floor of the house, although there was smoke damage throughout. The heat from the flames also caused the siding on a neighboring house to melt.

An investigation determined that the fire originated from a portable heater in a first-floor bathroom.
