Ottawa motorist sentenced for 12th drunken driving offense

TOLEDO — A Putnam County man who has been repeatedly convicted of drunken driving since 1981 was sentenced Monday to 30 months in prison.

Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Dean Mandros also suspended the driver’s license of Robert Torres, 53, of Ottawa, for life, and fined him $1,350.

While Torres and his attorney, Joseph Snyder, asked the court to order him into treatment, the judge said he may be able to do that later.

“I understand that substance abuse is a lifelong, ongoing issue, but at present, I have to be more concerned about the safety of others than … with your safety and health,” Mandros said.

State troopers stopped Torres on Dec. 25 in East Toledo and charged him with his 12th drunken driving offense.
