Lima Police officer accidentally shoots himself

LIMA — A Lima Police Department officer was recovering from a gunshot wound to his left hand after he accidentally shot himself while off duty over the weekend, Shawnee Township Police Department reported.

The officer, Scott Leland, was clearing a 9 mm handgun of ammunition inside his home off Fort Amanda Road at 6 p.m. Sunday when the accident happened, according to Shawnee Township Fire Department records.

Leland, 51, was taken to St. Rita’s Medical Center by ambulance, according to records.

The injury was not life threatening, Shawnee Township Police Chief Mike Keith said.

No one else was injured. Leland gave a full statement on the accident and was forthcoming explaining how it happened, Keith said.

The weapon was not his service firearm that he carries on the job, Keith said.

Leland has been on the Lima Police Department since May 26, 1993. He has worked as a detective and most recently was assigned to investigate computer crimes.
