New Knoxville to welcome Brazilian pastor

NEW KNOXVILLE — The Rev. Dr. Walter Altman will receive the Michelfelder Award bestowed by Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus.

The award is given to someone who exhibits an unusual degree of Christian service.

Altman has served as moderator of the World Council of Churches for more than six years and served in many other capacities in his native Brazil and now is a theological professor.

He will receive the award Monday morning, then meet with the faculty for a book signing. On April 5, there will be a reception for Altman from 5 to 7 p.m. at First Church of New Knoxville.

Upon retirement, Altman became interested in finding his relatives and ancestors and found dozens of the family names in New Knoxville. Among his relatives are the families of Lagemann, Eschmeyer, Telljohann, Meckstroth, Aufdarhaar, Hoge, Fledderjohann and others.
