Locals say ‘Superman V Batman’ delivers

LIMA — Don’t always believe what the critics say.

That was the common theme of people leaving the Regal 12 Cinemas in Lima as packed house after packed house came and went to see “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice” as the likely blockbuster hit opened nationally on Friday. While rated PG-13, the movie nonetheless was drawing plenty of younger children with their parents to see two of their favorite heroes go at it, only to join forces to stop the evil Doomsday later on in the movie.

On the Rotten Tomatoes website, critics were only giving the movie a 30 percent favorable rating. However, viewers were giving it a successful 74 percent favorable rating and Lima area viewers were not any exception.

Other than one very brief scene, the PG-13 rating can be contributed primarily to on-screen violence that comes with superheroes saving the world from ultimate destruction. Seven-year-old Ali Weber went to see the movie with her father and brother. Weber described herself as the ultimate Batman fan and said the movie certainly delivered. She had seen all of the Batman movies and said this was her favorite.

“It was pretty cool,” Weber said, decked out in her Batman outfit. “This was my favorite one. It was great because the good guys win.”

Both Batman and Superman outfits and T-shirts could be spotted everywhere as fans cheered on their favorite hero. Jacob McElroy, 22, of Fort Jennings, is a Superman fanatic and said he enjoyed the movie. McElroy was one of many who donned the “S” on his chest.

“I have watched Smallville, and I am familiar with all of the Superman shows,” McElroy said. “There were some things I thought the movie could have touched on more, but overall it was very good. There was a lot of action from the middle to the end of the movie.”

As to not give away the movie for those that have not seen the movie yet, McElroy said the ending was the ony part he didn’t get much thrill out of. The ending will leave Superman fans at a loss for words.

“I did not like it,” McElroy said.

The film is expected to help Warner Brothers make a comeback on the big screen. Armed with several flops lately, the film was expected to garner $300 million globally in its opening weekend. Directed by Zack Snyder, and starring Henry Cavill as Superman and Ben Affleck as Batman, the film carries had a $342 million price tag. Wonder Woman also appears in a supportive role and Lex Luthor is up to his usual antics.
