Electrical issue blamed for attic fire in University of Northwestern Ohio dorm

LIMA — No one was injured Saturday in a small electrical fire in the attic of a dorm at the University of Northwestern Ohio.

An electrical issue with the furnace system at 8:31 a.m. created a small fire. The three-unit dorm at 2450 College Park West, No. CP9, was safely evacuated, said Platoon Chief Brian Helmig, of the American Township Fire Department.

A safety services employee was driving by the dorm when that person spotted smoke coming from the eaves outside. The employee evacuated the dorm and called the Fire Department, Helmig said.

Students living in the dorm were moved to another dorm. Damage was estimated at $8,000, Helmig said.
