Lima students exposed to aviation industry

LIMA — The Ohio Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen visited Lima South Science and Technology Magnet School Thursday for two presentations in an effort to get students interested in the field of aviation.

The Tuskegee Airmen made their statement in history by becoming the first group of African-American fighter and bomber pilots during World War II. The pilots battled with acceptance due to segregation despite displaying outstanding performance during World War II. Anthony Gibbs of Ohio History Connection presented a story about the history of the Tuskegee Airmen and the battles they faced to be properly trained and participate in combat.

“This was their homeland, too,” Gibbs said in his presentation. “They were fighting two wars, one at home and one abroad. When they came home when the war ended, they found out there was still a war at home.”

John Mitchell of the Tuskegee Airmen said the group’s main goal is to get students excited about possible careers in the aviation field.

“There is aviation all around us and a lot of incorrect information out there,” Mitchell said. “There is a shortage of pilots and of people interested in other aspects of the aviation industry. Aviation is not being taught, and it is all around us.”

Mitchell said the Tuskegee story is the perfect platform to encourage future aviators.

“They see what they went through and that they were still very successful,” Mitchell said. “When it is presented in this historical format and what they went through, they can be asked ‘what is holding you back.’”

The day’s activities kicked off an after-school program that will begin next month at Lima schools. The program will be open to 30 students in grades 5-8 and will culminate with a May 21 trip to Ohio State University. The trip will allow students to go through various training exercises and will work with a flight simulator.

“It is always our goal to expose students to many different careers,” said principal Chad Fallis. “This was a great opportunity to get a historical perspective on an aviation career.”

Mitchell said the group usually gives talks in the Columbus area where they are based, but they are now planning to expand into other areas of the state to create more interest in the aviation industry.
