Community Action Program: Firefighter and cop of year honored

LIMA — A long-time firefighter and a veteran police officer were named the Community Action Program firefighter and policeman of the year Thursday.

Lima Police Officer Johnny Elchert was chosen for his involvement with the community and his willingness to always lend a hand even if he’s off work, said Derry Glenn, 6th Ward councilman who presented the awards.

“A lot of people love him. He’s a good officer. You can’t find men like that anymore,” Glenn said.

Elchert treats everyone with respect and is well known and well liked in the community, Glenn said.

Daryl Styer of the Perry Township Fire Department was named the firefighter of the year.

“He’s just a good guy,” Glenn said.

Glenn knows Styer well. Both worked in the state prisons system together for years.

Styer works as a paramedic and stays active in the community. In 2005, he was honored for saving a life, Glenn said.

The families of the two men also were present for the award ceremony held at the Beer Barrel on West Market Street. Glenn picked the location since it’s a locally owned business, he said.

Glenn has been giving out the awards for more than 10 years, he said.
