Man who pointed gun at sheriff’s deputy gets jail sentence

OTTAWA — A Leipsic man who pointed a firearm at a sheriff’s deputy last year was sentenced to six months in jail.

Daniel Tijerina, 53, also was sentenced Thursday to three years probation. He was convicted of obstructing official business, a fifth-degree felony, menacing by stalking, a fourth-degree felony, and failure to stop after an accident, a misdemeanor.

The incident happened when Sgt. Kevin Siefker of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office was attempting to serve Tijerina with a summons from another criminal case involving traffic charges.

Siefker identified himself as a sheriff’s deputy. Tijerina opened the door with a firearm pointed at Siefker. Siefker moved back, pulled his weapon and started giving Tijerina commands to put the weapon down, officials said.

After a brief standoff, Tijerina put the weapon down. Siefker served the summons and left Tijerina at his home. He returned the next day to arrest Tijerina.
