OSU Lima to hold open house

LIMA — Future students can find out what it’s like to be a Buckeye at the beach-themed “Buckeyes at the Beach” Open House on Friday at the Student Service Center at Ohio State Lima.

Representatives from admissions, financial aid and other student services offices will be on hand to answer questions. The event will also feature a campus tour and a student panel. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. and the event begins at 9 a.m.

Bluffton native attains degree

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Jeffrey Richards, of Bluffton, has earned a master of arts in education degree from the University of the Cumberlands.

Richards joined 569 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students who completed their studies in December.

ONU to host mock trial

ADA — Ohio Northern University’s mock trial program will host the 10th annual Polar Bear Invitational Mock Trial Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The competition will take place in ONU’s Pettit College of Law, Hill Building and Dukes Memorial. More than 150 students from 12 colleges and universities representing six states will participate in the tournament.

The tournament consists of four rounds, with trials taking place simultaneously in each round. Each mock trial has a panel of two judges who evaluate students on their knowledge of the case material and their presentation and litigation techniques. On Saturday, the first round of the competition begins at 9 a.m., and the second round begins at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the first round begins at 8 a.m., and the second begins at 1 p.m.

The tournament gives honors to the top teams as well as outstanding attorneys and witnesses.

Wapak resident earns master’s degree

OXFORD — Wapakoneta resident Craig Sammetinger has earned a master of arts in teaching degree in biological sciences from Miami University.

Since being accepted to the Advanced Inquiry Program master’s degree in 2012, Sammetinger has explored conservation and education at Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, while also conducting projects that have made a difference in the Wapakoneta area. Sammetinger is a teacher at Riverside High School.

Political commentator to speak at Bluffton

BLUFFTON — Julie Borowski, a YouTube political commentator, will present her speech “What is libertarianism, anyway?” at 11 a.m. Jan. 26 in Bluffton University’s Founders Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Borowski will discuss the basics of libertarianism and attempt to dispel the misconceptions surrounding the philosophy.

Borowski is best known for her YouTube channel where she discusses current events in an entertaining way. She has appeared on FOX Business Network and has been published in the Washington Examiner, Daily Caller, Red State and other online outlets.

Diversity scholarships available

COLUMBUS — The Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorneys is offering its annual Law Student Diversity Scholarship program to incoming second- and third-year black, Hispanic, Asian, Pan Asian and American Indian students enrolled at Ohio law schools. Incoming second- and third-year female law students enrolled at Ohio law schools are also eligible regardless of race or ethnicity.

Up to three scholarships in the amount of $1,250 each will be awarded to successful applicants. Applicants are required to submit a completed application, law school transcript and cover letter, as well as three letters of recommendation.

The completed application and all other requested material must be received by April 15. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. The application can be found at http://oacta.org. Winners will be announced in June.

Reception to be held for sculptor

BLUFFTON — A reception with artist Roger Sugden will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Bluffton University. Sugden’s exhibit titled “Shapeshifters” opened Jan. 4 and will continue through Jan. 29. The exhibit is on display in the Grace Albrecht Gallery of Bluffton University’s Sauder Visual Arts Center.

The public is invited free of charge. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Sugden, a sculptor from Fort Wayne, Indiana, describes the exhibit as “objects in motion.” He said he uses ancient themes and presents them in a futuristic way by using modern materials.
