American Legion Christmas dinner in Lima personifies spirit of giving

LIMA — On Christmas Day, as the song “Proud to be an American” echoed through the halls of the American Legion, Kyle Catlett was overcome with emotion.

“That song gets me every time,” Catlett said as he wiped the tears from his eyes. “It’s just a reminder of those who aren’t here because they’re serving their country, and we should be thankful for them.”

Catlett’s emotions when hearing the patriotic song are indicative of his dedication to honor and serve veterans, active military members, and the community as a whole.

For 13 years, Catlett and an army of loyal volunteers have put on the American Legion Family-Community Christmas Dinner for veterans and anyone else looking for fellowship and a free meal.

“I know holiday times are hard for a lot of people for many reasons,” Catlett said, “but getting to mingle with other people and being able to have a good meal, I think it’s good for them. I think a lot of times it helps with the loneliness they may experience.”

For three hours, Catlett and more than 25 volunteers served a dinner of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes and desserts to some 400 people as they enjoyed patriotic and Christmas music.

Catlett said the event would not be possible if it weren’t the dedication of volunteers who donate their time each year.

“Some people who volunteer here have family get-togethers going on at the same time, but they still come,” he said. “It’s such a selfless sacrifice they make, and I think their actions speak volumes.”

Because the dinner is free of charge, Catlett and the other volunteers purchase nearly all the food with their own money. But as a sign of good karma, local residents have started making donations to the cause.

Catlett said within the last day, he has received $240 in donations from people who want to see this Christmas dinner continue for years to come.

“I think what that says is people appreciate what we do,” he said. “But I tell them it’s not me they’re helping, they’re helping veterans and the community they’re a part of. To see people willing to help, especially this time of year, it warms your heart.”
