Teen hospitalized in Lima shooting

LIMA — Officials said a 17-year-old boy was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after he was shot Monday evening.

Sgt. Jason Warren of the Lima Police Department and another officer were called to 721 Third St. on a report of someone being shot. Officers arrived at the scene at about 7 p.m. to find the teenager had suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Warren said late Monday officers were still trying to piece the incident together as they guarded the home. Warren said a resident at the home had refused to let the officers search the property and that officers were waiting on a search warrant. Police tape was put up around the property.

However, several residents in the neighborhood were outside watching the action, and several said they believed the victim had been shot at Unity Elementary School and ran to the Third Street home. Investigators had the entire playground area of the school taped off, and several officers were combing the area with flashlights. One investigator approached a van with a brown bag, but would not comment on what it contained and would not offer any information.

As the two officers were in front of the Third Street property, multiple shots rang out again at 8:08 p.m. from close range, sending many gawkers running for their homes. The officers immediately communicated that shots were heard and requested more officers to come to the scene.

Several residents outside who refused to give their names said the residence on Third Street was a “hot house,” indicating that officers were at the property frequently.

Officer Tyler Reasor said there was no new information on the case as of 10 p.m. Monday. When asked if anyone was available to discuss the incident, he said it had been a hectic night and all officers were out on calls.

Officers could not confirm that the shooting took place at Unity. Warren said he believed the victim was taken to St. Rita’s Medical Center to be treated for his injuries. His name was not released.
