St. Rose school locked down while Lima Police Department officers hunt man

LIMA — St. Rose of Lima Catholic School was placed on lockdown Tuesday morning after police officers chased a young male with a gun.

The incident happened at 8:20 a.m. when an officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. The driver pulled into a driveway at 330 N. West St. and then ran, Lima Police Department officials reported.

The officer ran after the person, chasing him through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles parking lot at West Wayne and North Elizabeth streets. The person dropped a loaded handgun in that parking lot that police officers said they recovered.

The officer lost sight of the person near St. Rose Catholic School, 523 N. West St., which was placed on lockdown as a precaution as officers searched the area for the person, officials said.

Officers searched the vehicle and found crack cocaine inside. The vehicle was impounded, and investigators plan to talk to the owner, officials said.

Anyone with information on the person should call Lima Police Department at 419-227-4444.
