Sertoma names firefighter of the year

LIMA — Jack McDermitt’s first week on the Lima Fire Department was very memorable to say the least.

A woman and four children were killed in a firebombing and there were a half dozen other fires that week in 2000. The events of his first seven days on the job and the culture around the department to always work to improve a firefighter’s skill set made the 45-year-old captain who and what he is today.

For his dedication to the agency, McDermitt was named the 2015 Lima Noon Sertoma Club Firefighter of the Year.

“I have to thank all the guys I work with. We don’t do anything as individuals, we do it as a team,” he said.

But McDermitt said even more appreciation must go to his family, especially his wife who takes care of their children when he is away for a day at a time. She also sacrificed with a newborn at home 16 years ago when he was away for three months at firefighting school, he said.

Former Chief John Brookman, who hired McDermitt, said McDermitt was a loyal, hardworking, team player.

“Jack is one of those firefighters, first in, last out. He leads by example,” Brookman said.

McDermitt said the award is recognition to firefighters who continue to push for ways to improve the department.

McDermitt recalled some memorable fires such as a downtown warehouse fire last year, a fire in a downtown building several years ago that killed a person, and the fire that destroyed the Bistro.

But perhaps his most memorable fire was the first fire he fought with his now-retired brother, David McDermitt. His brother was a seasoned vet and McDermitt was a rookie.

“As we walked up to the front of the house the power line coming to the house burned through and dropped right next to us. I think I probably jumped 12 feet seeing sparks hit the ground,” he said. “My brother was with me and he said just watch out for that.”
