Jordan mum on choice for speaker

LIMA — U.S. Congressman Jim Jordan said Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives will meet next week to discuss picking a new speaker.

Jordan, nor others in his party, have decided on one person to replace John Boehner of Ohio, who announced his plans to step down at the end of the month.

Jordan, a Republican from Urbana, called Boehner a “good man who loves his country” but said it was time for him to go.

Whoever the next speaker is, that person must be committed to fighting for key principles of the Republican party, Jordan said, that include being pro-life, fighting President Obama’s overreach on various issues and controlling spending.

“We told people certain things in the election time. Let’s do what we said we were going to do when they gave us the privilege of serving in the United States Congress,” he said.

Jordan also said he opposes President Obama’s call for more gun control following a mass killing at an Oregon college on Thursday that left nine dead plus the killer. Jordan said he opposed new laws such as those the president proposed before any motive or reasons for the shooting were discovered.

Jordan said the solution lies in the communities, families and churches in each community across the country.

“The solution is not new laws,” he said. “More laws on the books don’t particularly stop the bad guys. What they do is make it tougher for law-abiding citizens.”

Jordan said he favors strong concealed carry rights that gives people the chance to protect themselves rather than the same measures the president continues to push for immediately after such violence occurs.

“That’s why I favor concealed carry because the bad guy has to stop and think,” Jordan said.
