Allen County students earn spots in leadership class

LIMA — Thirty-six Allen County high school students have earned a spot in the Allen Lima Youth Leadership Class of 2016.

The class provides hands-on leadership training, educates students about their community, teaches leadership and personal values exploration and trains leaders of future generations, a news release stated.

Each spring, students in Allen County high schools apply for the program. The class then runs the following October to April as students spend time in monthly sessions learning about and discussing leadership styles, community diversity, public speaking and government.

Lima Senior to host blood drive

LIMA — Lima Senior High School will host an American Red Cross Blood Drive from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the school’s auxiliary gymnasium.

Students from the school’s health occupations program will assist with the blood drive as a way to gain experience while also giving back to the community.

The blood drive is open to students and community members. Students must be at least 17 years of age to donate.

School concert season starts Wednesday

LIMA — This year’s Lima schools’ concert series will get started Wednesday with the high school choir.

Here is a list of performances happening now through the month of October:

•Wednesday: Lima Senior Fall Choral Concert, 7:30 p.m. in Lima Senior Auditorium.

•Oct. 8: Liberty Arts Magnet School Fifth/Sixth-Grade Band/Orchestra/Choir Concert, 7 p.m. in Lima Senior Auditorium.

•Oct. 13: Lima West Middle School Fall Orchestra/Choir Concert, 7 p.m. at West.

•Oct. 15: Liberty Arts Magnet School Seventh/Eighth-Grade Band/Orchestra/Choir Concert, 7 p.m. in Lima Senior Auditorium.

•Oct. 20: Lima Senior Fall Band/Orchestra Concert, 7:30 p.m. in Lima Senior Auditorium.

•Oct. 27: Lima Senior Marching Band Concert. 7:30 p.m. in Lima Senior Auditorium.

Imagination Station programs begin this week

LIMA — Imagination Station, a hands-on science museum, will bring programs to Lima schools beginning Friday at Liberty Arts Magnet School and South Science and Technology Magnet School.

In addition to visits by Imagination Station, student field trips are also planned to the museum, which is located in Toledo. Both the in-school visits and the field trips provide opportunities for hands-on science learning, a news release stated.

Imagination Station programs will also be held Oct. 9 and 12 at North Middle School.

Project Democracy class making scholarship donation

LIMA — The Lima Senior High School Class of 1990, known for spearheading Project Democracy, will make a scholarship donation Friday, and one of the class members will work with students earlier in the day.

The class will donate to the Lima Community Foundation for the purpose of scholarships. The check presentation will happen during halftime of Friday’s home football game. The game starts at 7 p.m.

The Democracy sculpture, which is located outside the east side of Lima Senior High School, came to be in 1992. The idea came from students three years earlier and grew into a communitywide project. The sculpture protested the 1989 massacre of demonstrators at Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

Dr. Todd Fish, who will be with the group, will also work with singers at Lima Senior during the day. He will be at the school at 8 a.m. to work with Steve Popa’s Masterworks Choir and Men’s Choir.

SESA bringing animal habitats program to Heritage

LIMA — Heritage Elementary School students will learn about animal habitats through hands-on experiments and a visit from a special guest Monday.

Kathy Buescher, of Science Enhancement for Science Advancement, will be at the school throughout the day. She’ll surprise students by spending part of the day in a gorilla suit.

Students will do several experiments as they learn about animal needs and adaptations, predators and preys, how animals adapt to survive and what they need in their habitats. Experiments will include having sticky hands like a bee, wearing specialized glasses so students can see like different animals and wearing bird beaks to see what different birds eat.

Presentations will take place from 8 to 8:35 a.m., 8:40 to 9:15 a.m., 9:20 to 9:55 a.m. and 12:30 to 1:05 p.m.
