Mercer County Sheriff’s Office snags 2 grants

LIMA — Mercer County Sheriff’s Office received $27,899 in grants for fiscal year 2015-16.

The two safety grants awarded to the Sheriff’s Office were $11,160 for the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program, and $16,740 for the Impaired Driving Enforcement Program.

These grants will allow the Sheriff’s Office to put more cars on the Mercer County roadways. Extra cars allow deputies to focus on the use of seat belts, deterring impaired driving, aggressive driving, and distracted driving.

The ultimate goals are to reduce fatal traffic crashes and reduce alcohol involved crashes.

With the 2014-15 grant, the Sheriff’s Office made 522 traffic stops, issued 67 citations and 476 written warnings. Deputies of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office have traveled 15,840 miles while working the traffic grants.
