UNOH building student activity center

LIMA — A pile of rubble that lies across the street from the University of Northwestern Ohio’s Indoor Athletic Complex will soon be transformed into a new student activity center.

Last week, construction crews tore down a building that previously housed Burgundy’s Italian Grille to make room for the university’s activity center, which is expected to be completed in spring 2016. The building had also served as Giovanni’s restaurant for a short time before the property was purchased by UNOH.

UNOH officials said the center will be equipped with a lounge, pool tables, video game consoles, TVs and food options. The university also plans to host an array of events that would normally be held at Club UNOH, which currently serves as the student activity center. A news release from the university stated that when the new activity center is completed, the public will be able to rent Club UNOH more often.

The activity center will also create more space for events, a UNOH official said.

UNOH President Dr. Jeffrey Jarvis said his vision of this building and property is to further enhance the campus living environment by creating a facility to match the “university aesthetics.” He said he envisions the building will serve as the “home base” for many social activities on campus.

The university purchased the former restaurant property in August 2014. The site consisted of a one-acre property, 70 parking spaces and a 4,500-square-foot building. It is located at 1365 N. Cable Road.
