False alarm about helicopter crash brings out first responders

WESTMINSTER — First responders were called to state Route 117 between Phillips and Amherst roads just after 8 p.m. Sunday in response to a possible helicopter crash.

However, word soon followed that it was an ultralight, not a helicopter, and it hadn’t actually crashed.

“It was constantly evolving,” said Sgt. Matthew Dyer, of the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Lima post. “We were told it was in a corn field, so I tried to get our aviation crews up here, but they were out of hours, so we made contact with (St. Vincent) LifeFlight.”

After several aerial searches of the area, no craft was spotted. Eventually, contact was made with the pilot, whose name was not available Sunday, through his brother, who said the pilot landed the craft in a field and was on his way home.

Crews remained on scene until after 9 p.m. as LifeFlight made several more passes in the vicinity.

“You’d hate to leave and have someone injured in a field who we can’t see,” Dyer said. “Better safe than sorry.”
