Shawnee announces schedule pick-up, open house dates

LIMA — Schedule pick-up for pupils attending Shawnee Middle School will begin Aug. 17. Schedules can be picked up from 8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Seventh- and eighth-graders can pick up schedules Aug 17. Fifth- and sixth-graders can pick up schedules Aug. 18, and all grade levels can pick up schedules Aug. 19. Supply lists for pupils are available on the school website at http://limashawnee.com.

Shawnee Middle School will have an open house at 5 p.m. Aug 24 for fifth- and sixth-graders. Pupils will be able to meet teachers, see classrooms and put materials away. Parents of seventh- and eighth-graders are invited to an open house at 7 p.m. Sept. 2. Parents of pupils in these grade levels will follow a “mini-schedule format” that enables them to meet each of their child’s teachers.

VWMS releases school opening information

VAN WERT — Van Wert Middle School has announced 2015-16 school opening information for parents and pupils.

Sixth-graders are invited to an orientation from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday. Pupils should enter via the VWMS Gym entrance. There will be a complimentary pizza lunch to conclude orientation, and students may be picked up at noon using the gym entrance.

Parents of sixth-graders are invited to a Parent Welcome School Fair from 9:15 to 11 a.m. Wednesday beginning in the PAC Lecture Hall. The event will start with an informal, informational meeting from administrators. There will also be an opportunity to walk through a school fair to get further information and to see all the activities that happen at VWMS. Parents may fill out paperwork, pay fees and put money on lunch accounts during the School Fair.

Seventh- and eighth-graders may stop by the school any time between 1 and 3 p.m. Wednesday. Pupils should enter using the gym entrance. A school fair will be available where pupils can pick up their class schedule, try out lockers and see all the activities that happen at VWMS.

Parents of seventh- and eighth-graders are also invited to the Parent Welcome School Fair between 1 and 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Upper Scioto Valley to hold open house

McGUFFEY — Upper Scioto Valley will hold an open house from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Monday. School fees may be paid at this time and those wishing to sign up for free and reduced lunches can meet with the food service director. The Ohio High School Athletic Association mandatory meeting for all junior high and high school athletes will start at 7 p.m. in the auditeria.

UF to offer free course

FINDLAY — Free, with no strings attached. That’s the deal The University of Findlay is offering to the public with a United States government-focused political science course.

This fall semester, which runs from Aug. 17 through Dec. 3, Political Science 110 will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. each Tuesday in Old Main Room 305, which is accessible by an elevator located on the west side of the building. The survey course, a traditional offering that will again include enrolled UF undergraduates, will provide analysis of the context of national politics in the U.S. and the institutions of American national government. Topics such as the U.S. Constitution, Congress, civil liberties and elections will be addressed.

University students will earn credit for the three-hour course by completing assignments outside of the classroom, engaging online and likely taking a final exam.

No enrollment or prep work is necessary for members of the public, who are welcome anytime to simply listen to or take part in class discussions.
