Tractor-trailer carrying chemicals blocks I-75 traffic

LIMA — An overturned tractor-trailer containing pool chemicals blocked traffic on Interstate 75 early Tuesday.

Officials were called to the scene at about 3:30 a.m. on I-75, just east of McClain Road, near Hanthorn Road. The tractor-trailer was traveling south on the highway, blocking the righ lane of I-75, said Director Tom Berger of the Allen County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

The chemical inside the trailer was a dry chemical that did not spill onto the highway, Berger said. The agency assisted with the spill. There was no danger to the public.

ERS, a contracting agency hired by the trucking company, Estes Express Lanes, was called to the scene to help with the cleanup process.

When officials initially arrived on scene, the driver of the tractor-trailer was trapped in the cab of the tractor.

“When we removed the windshield, he was able to climb out on his own,” said Greg Kirkendall, battalion chief with the Lima Fire Department.

The driver, Dale Kozan, 58, of Alban, Michigan, was taken to St. Rita’s Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries.

It is unclear as to what caused the tractor-trailer to overturn, or if other cars were involved in the incident, Kirkendall said.

Officials at the Lima post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said there was “no one that could comment,” as those who assisted at the scene went home after it was cleared.

No further details were available Tuesday evening.
