LIMA — Fresh off her reelection, Ohio Supreme Court Justice Sharon Kennedy was in town Friday, telling local Republicans they have to keep fighting for candidates from their party who support a free country.
While Republicans enjoyed success in the November election and have control of the U.S. House and Senate because of it, Kennedy said they cannot let their guard down or stop fighting.
“I ask that you not stand in the shadows but bring it forth with all your might,” she said.
Kennedy, a 53-year-old Republican, told the group two justices will leave the court next year and two more in 2018.
“In the next three years, the new majority of the Ohio Supreme Court will be elected,” she said.
Kennedy said it was important to elect Republicans who understand the job.
“We need judges who are going to honor their limited role in government — uphold the law, not rewrite it or legislate,” she said.
She thanked the group who helped her gain a strong victory last November. Republicans are in control of the all major offices in the state as well as the House and Senate.
“Because of you, 75 percent voted for a Kennedy, a conservative with a liberal-sounding name,” she said.
Kennedy, who quoted former President Ronald Reagan five times, also warned of infighting in the party.
“If we are not 100 percent on the same course, we will belittle and tear each other down to what end,” she said. “We cannot stand if we remain divided.”
Also during the luncheon, Allen County Republican Chairman Keith Cheney briefly spoke of the 2016 race for president of the United States. He said the Republican field has 10 candidates and soon Ohio Gov. John Kasich will join.
