Mark Figley: Biden family finances raise many questions

Rumors of financial shenanigans have doggedly followed Joe and Hunter Biden for nearly as long as there has been dirt, but they are not the only members of the Biden clan to be tainted in such a fashion.

Following the recent Capitol Hill testimony of Joe’s baby brother, Jim, who has been accused of leveraging the Biden family name for lucrative monetary gain, accusations of foreign influence-peddling have also extended to Jim’s wife, Sara Jones Biden.

Republican lawmakers are specifically interested in subpoenaed bank records wherein Sara wrote almost a quarter million dollars in checks to brother-in-law Joe for a “loan repayment.” What was the origin of these loans, and were they related to secret deals with China? House GOP committees want to talk with Sara to get the low-down.

History also shows that Sara and Jim’s champagne tastes on a beer budget have led them into relationships with questionable individuals and enterprises that ended in lawsuits and criminal investigations.

While Joe Biden has repeatedly claimed that he has never been involved in family business dealings over many years, documents obtained by America First Legal under an FOI request reveal more than 3,700 emails generated by then-VP Biden with Sara and Jim’s business, Lion Hall Group. That’s a whole lot of talk about something.

In 2018, the lovely couple was introduced to the founder of Americore Health, which needed funding to expand a network of rural hospitals. The Bidens claimed their Lion Hall Group could spur investment. In turn, they were provided a $650,000 personal loan, while Americore Health went bankrupt in 2019, laid off hundreds of employees and filed suit against the Bidens for false promises. Eventually, the FBI was even called in to investigate the matter.

Meanwhile, in August 2017, all-caring nephew, Hunter Biden, began wiring large monetary sums to Aunt Sara and Uncle Jimmy. The money was from CEFC China Energy; but in exchange for what? By 2018, the funds totaled $1.4 million. Republicans would just love to know more about Hunter’s generosity.

On Aug. 14, 2017, Hunter sent $150,000 to Lion Hall. On Aug. 28, Sara withdrew $50,000 from the Lion Hall account and deposited it into a personal account held by her and hubby Jim.

Then, on Sept. 3, 2017, she wrote a $40,000 personal check to Joe Biden for a “loan repayment.” This number just happened to match 10% of $400,000 mentioned in an arrangement Hunter made with daddy Joe referenced in an email on his discarded laptop.

A second personal check for $200,000 was made out to Joe by Sara on March 1, 2018, the same day husband Jim received $200,000 from Americore. This check was also for a “loan repayment.” It could happen to anyone and is casually summed up by the White House as a “smear campaign.”

Hunter’s bank, Wells Fargo, begged to disagree, citing possible financial crimes and money laundering. In addition, the Treasury Department issued a series of suspicious activityreports. To date, Sara has provided no credible explanation as House investigators continue to investigate.

Sara, Jim and Hunter Biden also used a $100,000 line of credit from CEFC in September 2017 to go on “an extravagant global shopping spree.” It’s always nice to have rich Chinese friends!

In what world does such activity pass the smell test? For people in the same family who possess so little prowess in financial management and repeatedly exhibit the fact, Sara, Jim and Hunter Biden defied all logic in continuously coaxing large sums of money from a multitude of people who should have known better. Even though Joe didn’t know a thing about any of it.

It just all goes to prove that the family that stays together gets rich together.
