Mark Figley: You can’t keep a good couple down

While Joe Biden spends a significant amount of time stoking the flames of racism, no one can top Barack and Michelle Obama on the topic. This was proven once again following the recent Supreme Court decision overturning affirmative action in making race a factor for college admissions.

After the ruling, Michelle tweeted that much work is left to be done to implement policies of “equity and fairness.” Barack chimed in that affirmative action had given a chance to “generations of students systematically excluded from most of America’s key institutions.”

Americans have grown accustomed to such lectures from the Obamas; however, their remarks were submitted from the comfort of their private yacht in the Greek Islands with actor Tom Hanks. Talk about racial oppression!

This hypocrisy is further heightened by the fact that Barack and Michelle own an $11.75 million mansion on a 30-acre estate in Martha’s Vineyard. Life is hard, but the former president doesn’t let it get him down. And he didn’t stop there.

After his European jaunt, Barack got riled up about so-called banned books. He then proceeded to declare his support for librarians who have been working hard to fight this scourge. Obama added that some of these books had “shaped” his life, and that many are “written by or feature people of color and/or those in the LGBTQ+ community.”

Two such books are “Gender Queer” and “Beyond Magenta.” The first deals with topics such as confusing adolescent crushes and how to express alternative sexual preference, with illustrations depicting and describing sexual activity. The latter describes teenage sex change procedures, hormone therapies, and child/adult sexual activity.

Obama characterized the actions by some to restrict such material as an effort to silence views that don’t fit in. He added that prohibitions on books are “profoundly misguided” and spoke of the importance of “engaging with different ideas and points of view.” And again, he thanked librarians for their “unwavering commitment to the freedom to read.” Wow!

Later, Obama directed people to the American Library Association’s “Unite Against Book Bans,” a campaign to bypass parents to ensure that books containing graphic sexual content remain in libraries and classrooms. Does this mean that our former president approves of such content indoctrination for youth?

If not, why does Obama defend it? Are these the type of books that made him the man he is today? For one so concerned about censorship, Obama’s administration failed to show any such alarm while setting a record for concealing government documents.

Whether it’s the Obamas, Joe Biden, or just about any other Democrat you can think of, the messages are consistently clear. In the case of Barack and Michelle, perhaps they were out in the sun too long prior to injecting themselves into the latest political discourse. Or perhaps they just can’t help proving why we’re so fortunate that they no longer occupy the White House to regularly promote the societal division that envelops us all.
