Reghan Winkler: Spring cleaning, DIY or for-hire

Spring is just around the corner, and now is the perfect time to start getting your home ready for the season. Here is a checklist to help you start tackling your spring cleaning and home maintenance tasks.

Start with a deep clean. Before you begin any other spring-cleaning tasks, it’s a good idea to give your home a deep clean. This includes dusting, vacuuming and cleaning all surfaces, including windows and floors.

Declutter and donate. Take the time to go through all closets, drawers and other storage areas for unneeded belongings that might be hiding. This could be an opportunity for you to donate or sell items you no longer need or use.

Give your appliances some TLC. Spring is a great time to give your appliances some much-needed maintenance. Clean out your fridge and freezer and vacuum the coils behind your fridge. Clean your oven, dishwasher and washing machine as well.

Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure your detectors are in good working order and replace any batteries as needed.

Check your HVAC system. Before the warm weather arrives, it’s important to have your HVAC system serviced. This will ensure that your system is running efficiently and will keep your home comfortable throughout the spring and summer months.

Get your outdoor spaces ready. Clean your gutters, trim trees and bushes and give your lawn a good raking. It’s also a great time to pressure wash your patio, deck and outdoor furniture. Don’t forget to plant some flowers and freshen up your landscaping!

Refresh your decor. Spring is a wonderful time to give your home a fresh look. Consider adding colorful throw pillows or updating your curtains. You could also switch out your bedding or add some new artwork to your walls.

If you’re not the DIY type, here are some tips when selecting a professional:

Decide what landscaping or home improvement project you want to undertake and establish a realistic budget for it. Seek recommendations from trusted family and friends who have completed similar projects.

Visit the Better Business Bureau website at www.bbb.org to read customer reviews and complaints about the professional you are considering. Look for high ratings and positive feedback from customers. Request references and photos of their work to get a better sense of their capabilities.

Schedule a lawn inspection with the professional you are considering. This will allow them to assess the scope of work required and provide an accurate estimate of the project’s costs, preventing any surprises or unexpected expenses down the line.

Ensure that all aspects of the project are detailed in writing, including the services to be provided, the scope of work, the start and completion dates, payment schedules, any discounts offered and service call charges if applicable. Additionally, include the duration of the contract and any cancellation policies.

Always obtain a receipt for any payments made and request a detailed list of what the payment covers. For your safety and protection, it is best to pay by check or with a credit card, as these methods provide a clear paper trail in case of any disputes or issues.

By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to getting your home ready for spring. Don’t forget to take some time to enjoy the beautiful weather and all that the season has to offer!
