Real Life Mama: The greatest Mother’s Day gift

0

As Mother’s Day approached, I was excited to see the handmade gifts that the girls would bring home from school. I will tell you what – bless all the teachers that do those – especially with the younger kids. While some years they were the only gifts I received, I think they still would have been some of my favorites.

Quick Fix: Curried Chicken with Peppers

Very sadly my longtime friend and renowned curry expert Raghavan Iyer passed away shortly after I interviewed him about his new book, “On the Curry Trail.” I feel privileged to have known him for so many years and have great admiration for his work.

Ask Angi: What’s the difference between plaster and drywall?

0

In nearly all American homes built in recent memory, you’re probably familiar with drywall, which is by far the most popular wall material in the nation. Quickly installed, solid, and with a distinctive sound when you tap on them, drywall is a great choice. However, it’s not the only interior wall material you might come across. Indeed, it’s a relative newcomer to the grand scheme of construction. Until about 80 years ago, most home interior walls were made from plaster. You won’t often see plaster installed today, but you often come across it in older homes. Here’s a rundown of the pros and cons of both.

Answer Angel: Selling your gently used shoes and clothing

0

Dear Answer Angel Ellen: My shoe width has been a “narrow” all my adult life. Finding narrow width shoes at a store has become an endangered species. I have many to sell but don’t want to see them returned due to fit. Any ideas? Some have never been worn. I really don’t want to donate them as these were expensive.

Vintage Lagerfeld caught this writer’s eye at the 2023 Met Gala

0

This year’s Met Gala, held on May 1, was a tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld, a complicated figure in fashion who was known for his devotion to his cat Choupette (more than one kitty homage prowled the Met red carpet), his habitual black-and-white uniform, and his years of designing for numerous fashion houses, most notably Chanel from 1983 until his death in 2019. Two of my favorite looks were actually vintage Lagerfeld, elegantly recycled. Dua Lipa, a co-chair of the event, wore a beautifully fitted 1992 Lagerfeld-for-Chanel tweed bridal gown (alas, she skipped the small matching boater hat worn by Claudia Schiffer for the dress’s debut). Vanessa Kirby wore a replica of a witty 1983 Lagerfeld-for-Chloe gown (the original is in the Met exhibit), whose elegant beading along the back depicts a showerhead. The world’s most glamorous showerhead, for sure.

Ex-etiquette: This Mother’s Day, here’s the meaning of ‘bonus mom’

0

With Mother’s Day right around the corner, all sorts of bonus mom articles and merchandise are popping up all over the internet. This prompted me to Google the term — I was interested in what the results might say, since I made up the term over 35 years ago, and this contributed to a whole Bonus Families movement.

With springtime’s warmer temperatures, Americans are once again turning their attention to getting away in the great outdoors.
