Lima engineer notes progress in downtown roundabout project

LIMA — Commuters through Lima’s downtown have seen a lot of orange in the vicinity of Town Square as construction crews continue to work to convert the intersection of Main and Market Streets into a single-lane roundabout, a project that began in April. Speaking about that project Wednesday during Mayor Sharetta Smith’s weekly media briefing, City Engineer Ian Kohli gave an update on the project’s progression.

“The contractor completed most of the work on the south side of the intersection and we were able to open that back up to traffic,” Kohli said. “They’re working on the north side of the intersection currently, and we have the north 100 block [of Main Street] closed. Hopefully, within the next week, that work will be completed.”

Kohli said that contractors will then transition to working on the inner circle of the roundabout along Market Street, which will allow the currently closed portion of North Main Street to reopen. However, commuters could still encounter closures in the area due to other phases of the project.

“One of the first things that will have to happen is we’ll have to install a drainpipe across Market Street just east of the intersection,” Kohli said. “That’s going to require a closure for one to two days. That’s currently scheduled for Wednesday, but with construction, things can change quickly. So when we have a firm date on that, we’ll provide more details, along with a way to get around the closure.”

While work is done on the inner part of the roundabout, Market Street traffic will be maintained with one lane in each direction, while both northbound and southbound Main Street traffic will be limited to a right turn only at the intersection.

The entire project is set to be completed in November.
