Loveable life-sized puppets, Peppa Pig and friends, visit Lima

LIMA — From Teletubbies to Peppa Pig, the Brits have created some lovable characters for children that are cherished around the world.

At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 12, Peppa Pig and her friends will be coming to Lima and taking part in the live stage performance “Peppa Pig’s Adventure” at Veterans Memorial Civic Center.

“The universal appeal of Peppa has a lot to do with family,” said the live show’s producer, Josh Blackburn. “Peppa has a very loving family that loves to go on adventures together. They experience the world together, and Peppa gets to learn and have fun with them along the way.”

According to Blackburn, kids are learning British accents, vocabulary and expressions from the Peppa Pig TV show, and the U.S. touring production will feature the same accents as the TV show, plus Peppa’s American human friend, Daisy.

Recreating animation on the stage is not an easy task. The costumes and lighting work together to bring the characters and scenes to life.

”The videos of the live show do the best at describing how all of the production elements work together to create theatre magic. With the life-size puppets for Peppa, George and friends along with the full-size costumes for Mummy and Daddy, the show is able to represent the TV show very well and keep the family scale accurate. The lights, sets, musical score and scenic elements together add up to a wonderful first theater experience for families,” Blackburn said.

Blackburn added, “Mummy Pig, Daddy Pig, Madame Gazelle, Peppa Pig, George, Suzy Sheep, Pedro Pony, Gerald Giraffe and Daisy all come together for this amazing stage show. We find kids ages 2 to 7 love Peppa Pig and are the most immersed, though, of course, families of all ages enjoy Peppa Pig.”

The plot of the Peppa Pig’s Adventure stage performance will focus on a school camping trip, and audience members learn about “trying new things, going new places and embracing adventure around every corner,” Blackburn said. “The kids help Daisy to her first day in Madame Gazelle’s class before they take a ride on the bus to the school camping trip, where they build a fire, tell stories and, of course, jump in muddy puddles!”

The songs featured in the performance will be “Today is the Day,” “Shake Rattle Bong,” “Hickory Dickory Dock,” “Bingly Bungly Boo,” “Teamwork” and “Muddy Puddles.”

“Peppa Pig Live has been around for several years in the U.S. and much longer in the U.K. This production is Round Room’s first tour with the brand,” Blackburn said. “The most challenging parts of this production all center around the world and touring environment at the moment. Our director is based in London, so travel was tricky for him, and the tour was fully cast and rehearsed last fall before having to be completely rescheduled.”

Tickets range from $20 to $59 each. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The one-hour show begins at 6:30 p.m.

For an additional advanced purchase, VIP ticket holders can pay $50 to bring a camera and take a photo of their child jumping in a mud puddle set, alongside Peppa Pig and friends, after the show. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Each child, parent or guardian must have a show ticket as well as a “Photo Experience” ticket to attend.

“We are very excited to be bringing the show to Lima,” Blackburn said. “Our production team has been working hand-in-hand with the great team at the Veterans Memorial Civic and Convention Center to make sure that we put on the best show possible.”
