LIMA — Procter & Gamble is set to become an even greater part of the Allen County economy with its announcement Monday of a planned $501 million investment in its Lima plant, an investment that promises to add more than 100 jobs to the region.
Monday’s announcement from Allen Economic Development Group (AEDG) points to growing demand in the company’s laundry product line as a factor in Procter & Gamble’s investment, which will add a new product line to the Lima plant as well as expand its current manufacturing and warehousing space. The plant currently employs 749 full-time employees and approximately 600 contract workers. This investment is expected to add 135 new jobs to the facility, representing $10 million in new annual payroll.
“We are excited to explore the potential expansion of our operations Lima, in order to better meet demand for our products and serve our consumers,” P&G Lima Plant Manager John Shaver said in a statement. “We are grateful to the Lima community, a place we have called home since 1968, for their continued support, and we look forward to many years of partnership and growth.”
This expansion benefited from a 1.805-percent, nine-year Job Creation Tax Credit from the Ohio Tax Credit Authority (TCA) announced Monday by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted. This tax credit incentive is beneficial in creating an environment in which businesses feel comfortable investing, according to AEDG President and CEO Dave Stratton.
“Incentive opportunities support businesses like Procter and Gamble, which continue to invest in their local operations and support community and economic development that enriches all residents of the Greater Lima Region,” he said in a statement.
Other tax incentives are being considered at the local level and at the state level with JobsOhio but have not yet been approved, Stratton said, but he believes this state-level incentive helped create momentum for P&G to commit over half a billion dollars to this expansion.
“I really believe it’s a win-win for Bath Township,” he said. “From our standpoint, P&G is a tremendous community partner. The momentum is going in the right direction.”
Work on the new product line is expected to begin in July, with completion expected in 2026.
