Fire cancels classes at St. Marys school

ST. MARYS — There was a small fire Thursday morning at St. Marys Memorial High School and Middle School. Classes were canceled for the day due to the odor in the gym and clean-up.

St. Marys Superintendent Bill Ruane was just entering the building when the alarm sounded.

“There was a small electrical fire in a light fixture in the middle school gym,” Ruane said.

The light fixture was over the bleachers, which made it easier to use fire extinguishers to put out the fire. The busses were dropping of students as the fire occurred. Students were returned to the busses, where they remained. This caused a delay in the second run for elementary students.

Ruane said it was the first time the district used the reunification process. Students in cars left. Students who rode busses were transported to East Elementary, where students were picked up.

The fire department came in to ensure the building was safe. The day was spent cleaning up from the three fire extinguishers used and airing out the building, Ruane said.
