Lima Noon Optimist club honors 15 students at annual “Youth Appreciation Week” gala

LIMA — The Lima Noon Optimist recognized 15 students at their annual “Youth Appreciation Week” recognition Wednesday during a meeting at The American Legion Hall in Lima.

The program is designed to honor local youth who deserve recognition for their efforts in areas of leadership, good citizenship, volunteerism and generally serving as a positive role model for others.

The recognitions are part of a long-standing traditional program sponsored by the Lima Noon Optimist Club.

Allen County Commissioner Cory Noonan as well as Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith read proclamations declaring the second week of February as “Youth Appreciation Week.”

Shawnee High School senior Brianna Ridenour was nominated for her work with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

“It might not seem that the Lima area has much to offer,” Ridenour said. “But once you truly dive in, it’s very beneficial to see the impact you can have on others and how many organizations are truly working to improve the lives and the quality of life in the area.”

Ridenour was directed to Big Brothers Big Sisters by her Octagon club advisor, teacher Merrit Brunelle at Shawnee High School.

“I had heard about it from past students, and the legacy it holds and how much of an impact it has on younger youth and middle schoolers in our area. I was intrigued,” Ridenour added. “As an older sister, I didn’t have that person there for me when I was younger, so I feel it’s a great opportunity for younger people to have a mentor.”

Gavin Miller, a student at Allen East High School, is an integral member of the cross country and track teams. He also volunteers at the Humane Society.

But Gavin’s keenest interest in in computer software, he told the crowd.

“Ever since I was young, I was always interested in technology. I built my computer last year. It was a really interesting process and it helped me reaffirm what I want to do in my life,” Miller said. “I like developing apps and games. It’s why I’m planning on going to Chicago, there’s a certain development studio there that I would Like to work at.”

The following students were recognized by the Lima Noon Optimist and the organization that nominated each student: Cadence Richard, Allen County 4-H and Johnny Appleseed Parks; Zane Rex, Allen County Fair; Gavin Miller, Allen East High School; Cory Patrick, Apollo Career Center; Chloe Rieman, Bath High School; Brianna Ridenour, Big Brothers Big Sisters; Madison Burkholder, Elida High School; Rachel Ryan, Girl Scouts; Reed Doneghy, Lima Central Catholic; Noah Edwards, Lima Senior High School; Kelley Hale, Perry High School; Delany Brinkman, Shawnee High School; Sierra Baumgartner, Spencerville High School; Samuel Meeks, Teens for Christ; and Emma White; Temple Christian High School.
