SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Shawnee Local Schools new Superintendent Jude Meyers spoke at the Shawnee Noon Optimist Club meeting Wednesday, sharing some of his insights from his first six months at the helm of the district.
“Shawnee is not a normal school. It is unique,” Meyers told those in attendance.
During the event, hosted at meeting at The Old Barn Out Back, Meyers explained various efforts to meet the needs of the Shawnee students.
Currently the Ohio Schools Facility Commission is evaluating the district’s facilities, from the middle school building, built in the 1920s, to the elementary schools, built in the late 1960s.
When that report is received, Meyers said discussions may begin about the possible replacement of Shawnee school building. A better undrstanding of the costs would be available at that time.
Meyers shared that the Birch solar proposal may or may not have an effect on the school’s finances. If the proposed solar farm does not materialize, then nothing changes.
If the Birch Solar project is completed as a pilot program, Shawnee may receive tax dollars. But if the project is not a pilot program, monies received will be deducted from the state of Ohio’s allotment to Shawnee Local Schools.
Meyers shared that strategic plans for the schools are being developed that includes transparency and a connection with members in the Shawnee community.
