Allen improves; Mercer still Ohio hot spot

LIMA—Allen County’s Public Health Emergency has been lowered to an orange alert as outpatient and hospital admissions for COVID-19-related symptoms have decreased or plateaued in recent weeks and the number new cases overall appears to be slowing.

But Allen County is still seeing a high prevalence of COVID-19 in the community: 43% of new cases in the past week were not linked to congregate settings like nursing homes and jails. And Allen County continues to meet the CDC’s definition for high incidence for a county its size, with 96.73 cases per 100,000 residents reported in the last two weeks.

Capacity in the region’s intensive care units is now 64%, up slightly from last week but still well below the 80% threshold during which space for new patients becomes a concern. About 10% of those ICU patients are hospitalized with COVID-19, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

Mercer County

still a hot spot

Mercer County reported the highest incidence of new COVID-19 cases per population for the second consecutive week, with 123 new cases recorded in the last seven days. When adjusted for population size, that translates to 298.7 new cases per 100,000 people—a measure that allows the Ohio Department of Health to compare the intensity of outbreaks in small, medium and large-sized counties.

According to the Ohio Department of Health, 100% of new cases reported in the last seven days have occurred outside of congregate settings.

But Mercer County has seen improvement in outpatient and emergency department visits as of late, and ICU capacity in the region remains below the emergency threshold at 64%.
