Seitz says victim in baseball bat attack ‘got what he deserved’

LIMA — Scott Seitz took the witness stand in his own defense Tuesday, telling jurors that Eric Glover “got what he deserved” when Seitz struck him with a baseball bat.

Jurors will begin their deliberations Wednesday to determine if a running feud between the two men over transactions involving the sale of methamphetamine are a legitimate excuse for the attack.

Seitz, 41, is charged with aggravated robbery and felonious assault in the attack on Glover that took place on the evening of Oct. 8, 2019, at a West McKibben Street residence. The state rested its case before noon Tuesday while the defense called Seitz as its only witness. Jurors will return at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday to hear closing statements from attorneys and then will begin their deliberations.

During his testimony, Seitz openly admitting striking Glover “because he had ripped me off before and was there to rip me off again” in the Oct. 8 drug transaction. Asked by Defense Attorney Carroll Creighton of his intentions when Glover arrived at the private residence, Seitz replied, “I was gonna beat his ass.”

In his profanity-laced testimony Seitz concluded that Glover “got what he deserved” after furnishing Seitz with five grams of “fake” meth several days earlier.

Jurors on Tuesday also heard testimony from a man at whose home the altercation took place.

Michael Wireman, who is under indictment in connection with the case, took the witness stand after Judge Terri Kohlrieser explained — outside the presence of jurors — that he had the right to remain silent and cautioned him that any testimony he gave could be used against him in his own criminal case.

Wireman said he first met Seitz on Oct. 8 when the man and a female arrived at the West McKibben Street residence where Wireman lived with his parents. After Seitz and Lambert arrived, Wireman said, all three went upstairs in the home and “got high” on methamphetamine.

When Eric Glover arrived at the residence, “Scott started hitting him with a baseball bat,” Wireman testified. “I got nervous because (Glover’s) car was parked in my mom’s driveway. I don’t know why but I got into his car and drove it away.” The car was found a few blocks away on Haller Street.

Testimony also came Lima Police Department officers who said they went to Seitz’s residence on Lakewood Avenue following the incident. Jurors saw police body camera footage of police attempting to arrest Seitz at the home and of Seitz telling police to shoot him. Instead they deployed a Taser and wrestled the suspect to the ground. A subsequent search of the premises yielded drug paraphernalia, suspected methamphetamine residue and a loaded AR-15 assault rifle.

Jurors viewed body camera footage from LPD Patrolman Logan Schick in which Seitz, while in custody and being transported to jail, says he “took care of business” against a “big ass dope man” earlier that evening.

“Dude tried to rob me and … I took him out,” Seitz is heard saying.
