David Trinko: The 12 days of Christmas break

Monday may officially be the Epiphany, but most people have put the wraps on their Christmas holidays already.

We held out until Saturday to take down our lights and tree, but there’s still time for us to reflect on the holidays that have just passed.

As such, I offer you the 12 Days of Christmas Break, as written by the father of 18-, 12-, 11- and now 6-year-old daughters:

On the 12th day of Christmas break, my true loves sent to me:

Twelve days of kids oversleeping (without a good reason to wake up in the morning),

Eleven fights a-fighting (over everything from whose stocking stuffer was whose to whose turn it is to empty the dishwasher),

Ten lost presents (usually found in a younger sister’s bedroom),

Nine days dancing (since every day is a good day to dance in a house full of girls),

Eight days of working (for an oldest daughter, because she can),

Seven times a-whining (“I’m bored.” “There’s nothing to do.” “I wish we could go somewhere.”),

Six cakes a-baking (because it’s fun to bake cakes, Dad),

Five bags of nuggs (they ate, of the chicken variety),

Four solo trips (breaking away with just Mom or Dad for a bit),

Three hours of gaming (on New Year’s Eve, because why not?),

Two exhausted parents (who just can’t keep up with the insanity),

and a season full of memories (which we’d never trade for anything in the world).

Here’s hoping there’s no need for a follow-up version on the 12 days of school after Christmas vacation.
