Campbell gets impressive wins in Lima city golf tournament

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — There are several first-time competitors in the Championship Flight of the Lima Men’s City Golf Championship, but probably none of them had a more productive day on Friday than Chance Campbell.

Campbell, a Heidelberg University golfer from Spencerville, beat Austin Goodridge, the runner-up in the city tournament the last two years, 3-and-2 in the first round of match play in the morning at the Shawnee Country Club.

Then, in his second-round match in the afternoon, he won 2-up over two-time city champion Todd Burkholder.

Campbell, a sophomore at Heidelberg, said he didn’t have big expectations in his first time in the city tournament. He qualified twenty-sixth in the Championship Flight with an 85 on Thursday.

“Honestly, coming in, I really wasn’t overly confident at all. But I kind of just threw everything at it and it worked out today,” Campbell said.

Asked what “throwing everything at it” meant, he said, “Just going for pins, not playing safe, trying to go for everything. For the most part it worked out. I made a lot of pars and that really was the key.

“I went up really early and stayed there until about halfway through the back nine. I kind of felt the pressure coming on but I took a bunch of deep breaths and was able to control it.”

Friday’s 36 holes of match play reduced the Championship Flight to eight players.

They will play their quarterfinal matches today at the Shawnee Country Club while the other six flights play their semifinals.

Two of the eight remaining players are former city champions – last year’s winner, Josh Hollar, and Phil Trueblood, the 2014 and 2011 winner.

Hollar will play Ian Haidle today and Trueblood will go against Dean Meyer.

Campbell will face Ian Friesner, also a first-time player in the tournament after graduating from Lima Central Catholic this year, and Steve Creps Jr. will play Brian Kuhlman in the other quarterfinal.

Trueblood defeated Roger Kuhlman 4-and-3 in his only match on Friday. Hollar won 2-up over Westin Young in his only match. Both had first-round byes after they qualified No. 1 and No. 4.

Hollar said his round was “definitely worse” on Friday than when he shot a 76 in qualifying.

“But luckily I came out with a win,” he said. “I didn’t play the best I could and hopefully it will change tomorrow.”

Trueblood’s opponent today, Meyer, was a long-time participant in the old Dr Pepper Tournament at Hawthorne Hills, but this is his first time in the city tournament.

He and several Putnam County golfers became eligible when they signed up for dual memberships at Hidden Creek Golf Club and Bluffton Golf Club.

“We joined at Bluffton and Hidden Creek and it made us eligible – Brian Kuhlman, Roger Kuhlman, Brian Norton, all the guys I used to play with out at Country Acres,” Meyer said.

The four semifinalists in the First Flight are: Bryan Joseph, Chris Inskeep, Ian Hasting and BJ McPheron.

In the Second Flight, the final four are: Rob Fletcher, Kirk Slusher, Jeff Harris and Michael Sarno.

Jim Sherrick, Patrick Heffley, Billy Taflinger and Mitch Hasting are the Third Flight semifinalists.

Todd Stump, Keith Augustus, Dennis Medeiros and Paul Masters Sr. are the remaining players in the Senior Championship Flight.

Mike Walsh, Mike Ketcham, Jeff Cary and Rob Mitchell are still competing for the Senior Open Flight title and Willie McGuire, David Webb, Jim Odenweller and Denny Watt are the Super Senior Flight semifinalists.
