Edith Mary Armstrong Adams, 89, died at 4:55 p.m. Jan. 5, 2011, following a short illness, at her residence, surrounded by her family.

She was born Feb. 23, 1921, in Middle Point to George Allen and Mildred G. Ditto Armstrong Sr., who preceded her in death. On March 22, 1941, she married Layton V. Adams, who died Aug. 30, 1991.

Mrs. Adams was a homemaker and had retired on Feb. 23, 1983, from The Journal News, Spencerville, after 25 years. She was a member of Spencerville United Church of Christ, where she was a Sunday school teacher. Because she was always interested in working with young people, she also became a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and an adviser for the 4-H for several years. She was a 1939 graduate of Spencerville High School. She had a great interests in crafts, especially sewing, quilting and crocheting. She was an avid sports fan, cheering on the Cincinnati Reds in the summer and a die-hard fan of The Ohio State University Buckeyes football and basketball teams. She was a charter and life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6772 Auxiliary and a life member of American Legion Post 191 Auxiliary, both in Spencerville.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan D. (Fred) Lee, of Spencerville, and Joyce A. (Edward) Williams, of Concord, N.C.; six grandchildren, Sheila Barton, Crystal (Daniel) Bercaw, Melinda Murrell, Sharla Adams, Brent (Shelli) Adams and Michele Whetstone; two stepgrandsons, Brett Williams and Scott Williams; 13 great-grandchildren, Philip (Michele) Etgen, Kyle Etgen, Cynthia (Kevin) Williams, Allison Adams, Mitchell Adams, Alexandria Bercaw, Reagan Bercaw, Michael Whetstone, Samantha Whetstone, Nick Reynosa, Cole Williams, Reagan Williams and Gabriel Williams; a brother, Alfred (Frances) Armstrong; a sister, Gwen Uncapher, of Mendon; a brother-in-law, Harold Fleming, of Van Wert; and two sisters-in-law, Barbara Armstrong and Marilyn Armstrong.

She was preceded in death by a son, Larry E. Adams; four brothers, George, Paul Thomas and infant Larry Armstrong; a sister, Catherine Fleming; a great-grandson, Brock Bercaw; and two sisters-in-law, Mildred Armstrong and Linda Armstrong.

Services will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home, Spencerville. The Rev. R. Vincent Lavieri and David W. Howell will officiate. Burial will be in Spencerville Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. today and one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home.
