William M. Garland Sr.

William M. Garland Sr., 73, died at 11:05 p.m. April 6, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Dec. 9, 1939, in Bedford, Ind., to Hubert M. and Alice M. Hayes Garland. His father preceded him in death, his mother survives in Lima. On Aug. 26, 1961, he married Karen K. Metcalfe, who survives in Lima. They were married for more than 51 years.

Mr. Garland retired from Marathon Electric after 40 years. He graduated from Lima Senior High School in 1959, where he was a two-year letter winner in football. He proudly served in the Navy from 1959 to 1963, where he served aboard the USS Forrestal. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 370, where he loved to play cards, especially poker. He also loved being a member of the Umpire Association and the Lima Bowling Association. He had coached Little League for Bath schools. He was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Reds and The Ohio State University Buckeyes. He enjoyed the companionship of his cats.

Survivors also include four children, Brenda K. (Rob) Dunlap, of Lima, William M. (Lauri) Garland Jr., of Cairo, and Dawn A. (Richard) Rapp and Kara A. (Scott) Canter, both of Lima; 15 grandchildren, Tiffany (Joe), Amanda, Taylor, Ashley, Nicholas, Heidi (Drew), Andrew, Haley, Hollie, Rachel (Justin), Joseph (Heather), Jennifer (Fred), Regan, Devyn and Brandon; and five great-grandchildren, Olivia, Audrina, Rihanna, Taiden, Colton, and one on the way.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Joanna Garland.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Eastside Chapel, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275. Pastor Mike Hartman will officiate.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 to 8 p.m. today and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Dialysis Center at Lima Memorial Health System.
