LIMA — Those anxious to work out at Planet Fitness may soon have their chance.

The health center’s opening is planned for mid-march, said Mark Christie, managing partner of a subgroup of Planet Fitness that franchises in Ohio.

The membership presale is going on, offering people a sign-up price of $1 with a $10 a month membership fee until Friday, Christie said. Then the $1 sign-up fee will increase.

Those interested in membership can go to the health center’s future location at 927 N. Cable Road, where a small retail space is set up near where the gym will be. The membership office is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

“It’s been doing very well,” Christie said of the presale. “People are just very happy, very thrilled we’re just in Lima.”

Though he didn’t have an exact number of those who have signed up, he said it’s been a “very good turnout.”

“We’re just excited to get open,” he said. “People are really anxious to get their workout started.”

Construction on the interior of the building, previously Rays Supermarket, is progressin. When they’re done, renovations on the 20,000-square-foot space will have cost about $2 million, Christie said in a previous Lima News interview.

The company is also hiring. Though it has hired some of its planned 14 employees, there are some spots still open, Christie said. Those interested can apply through http://planetfitness.com.

“We’re just thrilled to be a part of the community,” he said.
