Ex-Shawnee runner advances at indoor championships

BOSTON — Former Shawnee runner Tom Scott advanced won his heat to qualify for the finals of the 1,000 meters at the USA Track and Field Indoor Championships on Saturday.

Scott finished with a time of 2 minutes, 24.17 seconds which was the eighth fastest time overall. Robby Andrews had the fastest time of 2:19.85. The finals are scheduled to be at 5 p.m. today.

Ex-Van Wert runner 3rd in 800

GENEVA — Former Van Wert runner Jared Fleming finished third in the men’s 800 meter race for Ohio State at the Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday. He finished with a time of 1:49.28. Indiana’s Tre’tez Kinnaird won the event with a time of 1:48.89.

Lima Striders to meet today

There will be an informal meeting of the Lima Striders at 3 p.m. today at the Cambridge Center located at 418 N. Central Ave.

The upcoming AAU Track & Field season, fees and uniforms will be discussed. The Striders are open for those between the ages of 5 and 18 who live in Allen County and beyond. Practice starts March 28. For more information contact Administrator/Head Coach Chris Jackson at 419-371-6198.

OAC championships

BEXLEY — Senior Catie Huber garnered three first place finishes to lead the Ohio Northern women to a third place finish at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships at Capital Center on the campus of Capital University.

Northern (45-7 overall) finished with 115 points. Mount Union won the team title with 191 points, followed by Otterbein in second with 123.50 points and Baldwin Wallace in fourth with 92 points.

Huber was named the most outstanding distance runner of the meet. Huber won the 1,000 meters (3:01.38) and mile (5:15.7). She also joined junior Rebekah McCutchen and freshmen Alexis Kandel and Emily Richards in winning the distance medley relay (12:23.54).

The ONU men had one event champion, freshman Matt Molinaro in the 800 run (1:55.83).

The Polar Bears (44-6 overall) finished third out of 10 teams with 94 points. No. 2-ranked Mount Union won the team title with 209 points, John Carroll was second with 116 points and Otterbein was fourth with 83 points.
